I remember very vividly the weekly excursions to the city museum my mom used to take both my little brother and I. My six-years-old eyes spent hours staring at the rocks and minerals carefully displayed in the Hall of Natural History. Giant amethyst, perfectly crystallized calcite and shiny cubes of pyrite captured my imagination and ignited a desire for rock hunting that continued for many years.
It was on a recent visit to a marble factory that brought this memory out of storage.
Thank you to my daughter for drawing out these memories and thank you to my wonderful mom for providing a place to create them.
Christie may remember our marble games? We would plop a blanket in a pile on the floor and use all the resulting caves and rolls as marble homes with an overlooking balcony for the marble King and Queen in the center. We would parade that King and Queen (the biggest, prettiest marbles)around in a blue convertible...good memories.
ReplyDeleteJust goes to show that museums and all our other parent-created learning moments are great and so important but sometimes maybe the best thing we can do is shut the kids in a room together with a blanket, some marbles and a toy car. They will still create memories to last a lifetime and mom gets to relax in peace with a cup of coffee in another room!
:)
I'll never forget those marble games . . . in fact it's still the first thing I think of when I see a blanket left in a big pile. :)
